He started his career at the age of 17 by playing in Kosarkaski Klub Split. He came under the limelight when the team won the EuroLeague for three consecutive years from 1989 to 1991. He again played in the league in the 1993 season. Split apparently won the Triple Crown in 1990 and 1991 for its extraordinary performances in the EuroLeague.

In the following year, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. After a short period of time, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks. In the 2006-2007 season, Kukoč was not taken by any team, and thus, he decided to retire.
