- Mark McGwire started his career while he was in school. In school, he played baseball, golf, and basketball. Though he was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 1981 amateur draft, he did not take up the contract. He also played college baseball at the University of Southern California. In 1986, McGwire debuted in the major leagues hitting three home runs and nine runs batted in 18 games.
- In 1987, he led the AL home runs and tied for the major league lead with Chicago Cubs right fielder Andre Dawson. He also led the major leagues in SLG. He was a one-dimensional layer.
