He is a member of the Democratic Party and held his New York City Public Advocate office from 2010 to 2013.  He was born on May 8, 1961, and is 60 years old. He was born in Manhattan and was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He started his career as an elected official on the New York City Council.
